Gardening Direct has lots of lovely fruit trees available to buy right now.
Fruit trees prefer sun although some varieties may be tolerant of some shade.
You should pick areas that are not in frost pockets as these will damage blossom and results in a lack of fruit.
Waterlogged areas are also not suitable as the roots will rot.
Soil preparation can be done in advance so that it is ready for when trees arrive and they can be planted straight away. You dig a decent size hole about 2 ft deep and about 4ft square. Dig in some well rotted compost if possible or well rotted horse manure.
Most trees will be dispatched at the right time to be planted out. Bare root plants can be planted almost at any time, but plants in pots or tubs need to be planted out at certain times. Often between October and December is a good time. Avoid wet or frosty days,
Plant the tree at the same depth it was in it’s pot, or look for the soil level on bare rooted trees. Look for the rootstock join and make sure this is above ground. Fill in the soil packing it down firmly to avoid air pockets.
Staking trees is a good idea – either one either side or one more sturdy post. Use soft bands that will come off easily as the tree grows and make sure that they are still firmly bedded a few days after planting.
Once the trees are a good size stakes can be removed.
Instructions are normally included when you buy trees so take note of any specific instructions.

Gardening Direct has these greenhouses available. They vary in size and budget and should show you that a greenhouse is well within your reach!
A greenhouse enables you to grow tomatoes, aubergines and peppers during the summer. It’s a great place to keep tender plants over the winter and you can even grow plants in it all year round – a vine can do very nicely in a greenhouse!
If you like growing vegetables or flowers from seed then you’ll find the extra space a greenhouse gives you invaluable. It’s great for getting some trays of seeds off to an early start! If you grow potatoes in bags then you can also start off some first earlies at the beginning of the year inside the greenhouse! This means your new potatoes are even earlier and makes them more special!.
Heating a greenhouse can be done by either a parafin heater or an electric heater. There are also bottled gas heaters available. Work out how much space you have for one. You can put one on earth or on a concreted patio area. If you have it on soil though you can plant directly into the soil which enables plants to do better water wise as they have more soil around the roots to draw water from. If you have one on a paved area then this can be very tidy and neat and you’ll get less weeds growing! It’s a great idea if you have pots to have some of the large grow bag trays to sit them in. That way they can have some extra water as a reserve on hot days! If you are growing tomatoes then sit a growbag on a tray with a couple of holes for drainage and insert pots into holes on the top side. Fill these with compost from another growbag and then plant the tomatoes in this. It gives them extra volume for the roots and means they retain water better!
A greenhouse is great for potting up plants too and can of course be used even when it’s raining outside! If you love gardening then a greenhouse is a must!
Lean-To Greenhouse (4ft x 6ft) £279.00

The size and design make this the perfect choice for small gardens or balconies. Don’t let a lack of space rule out the benefits of having a greenhouse. Easy to install.
