Now is the ideal time to apply a bark mulch to beds and borders before plants get too large and whilst there is still moisture in the soil.

Applying a thick layer of bark to a depth of 50mm will inhibit weed growth, reduce moisture loss and insulate plant roots. A covering of bark reduces light so preventing germination of many weed seeds and fewer weeds provide less competition for available moisture and nutrients. Using bark to control weeds is also safer than applying herbicides.

Bark is one of the secret weapons of water conservation in the garden. The appropriate use of bark mulch in the garden can help plants through the drier summer months by preventing the majority of water loss by evaporation from the soil. It also adds organic matter to the soil and helps prevent erosion.

Rolawn Landscaping Bark is a mid-dark brown, multi-purpose grade bark, derived from forestry woodchip, which will enhance the appearance of landscaping projects. Available in bulk bags containing approximately 1000 litres when packed which cover up to 20m² to a depth of 50mm (2″) and also in 60 litre bags.

Rolawn Play Grade Bark is a quality, reddish brown, decorative, ornamental pine bark; which is ideal for use in children’s play areas. It is tested to BSEN1177:1998 regarding impact absorption. Each bag contains approximately 1000 litres when packed and covers up to 3.3m² at a depth of 300mm (12″).

If you have beds and borders then you might like to use bark as a mulch to keep the weeds down or cover weed suppressant fabric.

RoLawn Direct have three types of bark – landscaping, decorating, and play quality bark.
Landscaping is for paths and other areas, decorating bark is a prettier golden brown colour and play bark is suitable for play areas.
Play areas like swings and slides need bark if the grass is getting scuffed or muddy. Create a boxed in area and cover the surface to the required depth.
Use bark mulch to protect plants from weeds. They will stop seeds from germinating and slowly rot down to improve the soil. You can buy bark in bags too. Buy in bulk bags if you are happy to unload from place, or buy it in bags to allow you to move bags around the garden.
