New lines at Crocus
dogwood £39.99
Position: full sun to part shadeSoil: any moderately fertile soilRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: May and JuneHardiness: fully hardyA fast-growing, deciduous shrub or multi-stemmed tree that has many charming features. This makes it a valuabe addition to the garden, where it will add interest throughout the year. In late winter, loose clusters of yellow flowers create a haze of colour on the bare stems and these are followed by bright red, edible fruits. The dark green foliage emerges in spring after the flowers and will turn brilliant shades of red and purple in the autumn. After the last leaf has fallen, the flaking bark on the stems creates further, but perhaps more understated appeal.Garden care: In early spring remove any misplaced or crossing branches and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.

Dobies have lots of onion sets avaiable.
An onion set is really a small onion bulb.
You can grow onions from seed but most people start with sets as it’s a head start!
One of the most important things with onions is to keep the patch well weeded. You can hoe the ground if you have planted the onions far enough apart in even lines. You’ll appreciate the accuracy needed once you come to hoe! Get a piece of wood cut to the right length for distance and put in a string line to keep them in a neat row.
You plant them with the pointy end up and just showing through. You can cover the area to stop birds pulling them out until they’re rooted. Use mesh or net. The tiny bit of stem showing will look very interesting to birds that like worms which tempts them into pulling them up!
Plant normally in March or April. But read the instructions that come with the onion sets.
If your onions start to develope a flower stem then cut this out immediately as it saps the strength of the plant and means it doesn’t put it’s energy into growing the bulb!
The week before you grow after you’ve weeded and raked the bed you should apply some fish, blood & bone or Growmore fertiliser to the patch. Rake in.
You can use the onions straight from the garden – or if you want to store them you need to let the stems fall over on their own and then it’s time to lift them up and ideally let them sit in the sun outside for a few days to dry off. If the weather turns wet though you’re best drying them in a shed or in the greenhouse. Brush the mud and broken leaves off and then cut the long stems off. You can learn to tie them up into strings if you get the chance too and then this makes storing them easy. Otherwise store in a flat box and keep an eye on them!
Easy to grow and idea for beginners. Success rate guaranteed by starting with a set not a seed. Apart from the birds at the beginning being a nuisance (Just replant any that get pulled up) and they should do well.
Some people use the same bed again and again for onions. It’s up to you whether you do. Crop rotation says you really shouldn’t though.

Broad bean seeds and plants at Dobies. They are very easy to grow. They’re a delicious bean you take from the pod and cook and enjoy! There are several different types including a dwarf variety which can be grown in pots.
Plants the seeds either in the ground outside or start off in pots in the greenhouse. They’re quite hardy though.
They’re an ancient plant with remains of Broad Beans being found in Israel which date back as far as 6,500 BC.
Plant in a sunny spot and hopefully not a windy place. They will bend over in the wind and grow still but it means the pods are often touching the ground and this enables slugs or snails to attack the bean pods.
They’re fairly touch though and you’ll get lots of pods off each plant with the pale white with a dark spot flowers looking subtle. Most people pinch out the soft leaves right at the top when it gets to about 4ft tall as this is what the blackfly will really attack. They’re fairly resistant though and should be ok even if you don’t. The beans are best picked often as when they get bigger their skins are more noticable. Some people rub off the outer skin before cooking, but it’s a lot of fuss really!
They’ll germinate any time from March onwards even in cold soils as low as 2’C so there’s no need to fuss over them – but if you’re using a patch of the garden for an over winter crop starting them in pots indoors means you can put them out later on after your first crop has gone. You can also sow some in the autumn. You can start them in cloches outside or use cut off fizzy pop bottles as mini incubators over the seed you’ve planted to give them a good start! If you do plant in the autumn make sure it’s not in a frost pocket as the flowers will not set if they’re frozen off – a bit of fleece thrown over might help them though.
They don’t need a huge lot of attention – watch out for blackfly and water in dry weather but they’re not as thirsty as the runner beans!
You can stake the plants if you like to keep them tidy. Pick the beans and use fresh or freeze or dry them. Save some seeds for next year if you like. Boil and serve with your dinner, or add to stews and soups!
