Cornflower Meadow mix

Cornflower Meadow Seed Mix, 10g
 £3.70
Cornfield annuals were once a common site in fields of corn, but then agriculture went through its chemical revolution and the lovely cornfield annuals all but disappeared. Fortunately, their sheer beauty has been their saviour and they prove to be one of the easiest and most rewarding of all wildflowers to grow. Our seed mix contains the pink of Corncockle, the blue of Cornflower, the glorious reds of Poppy, the vivid yellows of Corn Marigold and the clean whites of the beautifully scented Corn Chamomile. We’ve even added a small amount of Farmer Phil’s home grown corn varieties to add that little bit of extra interest, the ripening seed is a favourite food for finches to feed to their young. Sow in autumn or spring at 3gm per square metre, rake into the surface and water if dry. If autumn sown you may get more Poppies and Corn Marigold, but the end results are always fantastic.

Composter that grows with you

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Modular Composter, Triple Bay £230.00

Modular Composter, Double Bay £208.00

Modular Composter, Single Bay
 £133.00
This is the system for larger scale composting. Although the Single Bay can be used very successfully as a stand alone composter, its clever design means that, as your need for composting space increases, you can simply add extension Add-on Bays allowing the composter to grow to meet any composting challenge. Sturdily made from ACQ treated timber every unit in the system comes with full assembly instructions. Each modular bay measures 900 x 900 x 900mm and holds over 700 litres. Made to last.

Start filling one bay and then when that’s fill start on the next. In a big garden it makes sense to have three bays for composting in. This gives time for the first pile to rot down properly.

Great plants for the garden

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Wild Thyme, 3 Plants in 90mm Pots
 £9.00
Famously used in all sorts of cooking: with meat dishes, chicken stuffing and an addition to any mushroom dish. Our native wild thyme is mild in flavour, so use lavishly. Also a good plant to grow around paving, the spreading stems are crushed and fill the air with their scent, lovely! These native wild herbs provide a more subtle flavour than commercially available alternatives.

Lesser Knapweed, 3 Plants in 90mm Pots
 £9.00
A common British native, except in the Highlands. A medicinal plant used to treat scabs, whilst the flower tops have been used to make dyes. You should aim to plant ‘drifts’ of four to six plants close together to recreate the conditions in which the plants grow naturally, as this will help to produce wildlife friendly areas. They can be planted at almost any time of year, though care should be taken to keep new planting well watered in summer.

Wild Marjoram, 3 Plants in 90mm Pots
 £9.00
Pink flowers July to September are a rich nectar source for bees and butterflies. Its aromatic leaves can be used to make tea or be added to tomato or potato salads. These native wild herbs provide a more subtle flavour than commercially available alternatives.

Bokashi from Wiggly wigglers

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Bokashi Active Bran which is a dry mixture of bran and molasses that has been inoculated with the correct levels of Professor Higa’s tiny creatures. Sprinkle a layer of Bokashi Active Bran over the kitchen waste you want to compost, and that’s it… the beneficial micro-organisms in the Bokashi get to work treating your waste in a process that takes just a couple of weeks. At the end of the process the waste doesn’t really look as though it has decomposed, if anything it looks as though it has been pickled, but when it is incorporated into soil (or added to a conventional compost heap) it breaks down amazingly rapidly, releasing large quantities of soil boosting probiotic micro-organisms which nourish the soil naturally.

Bokashi Value Pack (18 litre), Black Kit
 £62.00
This is our recommended start-up system for Bokashi composting. It includes 2 of our Bokashi Buckets and 1kg of Bokashi Active Bran – all loaded with beneficial micro-organisms – plus Instructions. Start off your Bokashi composting with one of the buckets. Keep adding your waste mixed with the Bokashi Active Bran until this bucket is full, then set it aside and leave it for a fortnight. After this you can safely add the contents to your conventional composter or dig them into your garden where they will compost amazingly quickly. Meanwhile you can carry on composting using the second bucket.

Bokashi Active Bran, 20kg (4 x 5kg bags)
 £80.00
Our Bokashi Active Bran is the heart of our Bokashi Composting system. It is a dry mixture of bran and molasses that has been inoculated with beneficial micro-organisms… a carefully controlled mixture of microscopic bacteria, yeasts and fungi that work together to speed-up composting, suppress pathogens, prevent putrefaction and eliminate foul odours. Using it couldn’t be easier… just sprinkle a layer of Bokashi over the kitchen waste you want to compost. The beneficial micro-organisms in the Bokashi get to work treating your waste in a process that takes just a couple of weeks, after which it breaks down amazingly rapidly when is incorporated into soil or added to a conventional compost heap. Our Bokashi can be used in any suitable container but we recommend our Bokashi Bucket (P2107) which is made from a special beneficial micro-organism impregnated plastic. A 1kg pack of Bokashi Active Bran should last approximately 3 to 4 months when used in this composter.

This bucket is made here in the UK from a special plastic loaded with beneficial micro-organisms. A sump and tap in the base allow you to collect any excess liquid that drains off during the process, we even include a small plastic cup that fits neatly under the tap to help you collect the liquid. You can buy this Composter on its own, but you will need to add our Bokashi Active Bran, also full of beneficial micro-organisms, to use it.

Most beautiful compost bin ever?

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Looking for a beautiful compost bin – then Wriggle Wrigglers have this really lovely compost bin:

Beehive Composter, Blue

Their beehive composter is so attractive that there’s no need to hide it away at the bottom of the garden! Nestle it in amongst your vegetable patch or flower garden, anywhere you can add your waste conveniently and have your compost ready to use when you want it. There’s a special door at the bottom that lets you harvest your compost easily and, if you want a whole batch of compost at once, the four sections simply lift apart. Made locally from rough sawn, sustainable, treated timber, each preassembled layer simply stacks easily on top of the next. The clever design allows air to circulate within the bin. It is also available in a range of special colours – these are painted to order, please allow five days for delivery. Size: 615 x 615 x 950mm (approx 300 litres) Please note that current Beehives do not feature the ‘handle’ on the lid, as shown in some photographs.

Compost bins are often ugly things we want to hide away at the bottom of our gardens. There’s no need to hide this one away though. It truly is just beautiful! You will love having this compost bin in your garden. Your friends will be envious too. It’s based on the WBC hive – William Broughton Carr – that’s the classic hive design people think of when you imagine a bee hive. This compost bin is stylish and lovely. Your garden will look really amazing with it!
I believe your friends will think it’s the most beautiful compost bin they’ve ever seen too!
This compost bin could be a great gift for a reluctant composter. If someone you know doesn’t want to have a black dalek bin in their garden then this stunning compost bin might convince them that composting is for them.
You can compost all your garden waste including lawn clippings, as well as vegetable peelings form the kitchen.

Wool compost

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Wool compost available at Wriggle Wrigglers! Sounds really interesting stuff.
It has high levels of potash and nitrogen – this is a great alternative to peat made from entirely renewable sources, made from bracken and wool.

Wool Compost, Wool Compost 6 x 30 litres

Wool Compost, Wool Compost 6 x 30 litres £49.25
This Wool Compost is made on Dalefoot Farm in the Lake District. The idea for the recipe came from old gardening books – from where many good ideas have been forgotten – and includes wool for its water retaining properties and bracken for its naturally high levels of potash. Made from natural and fully renewable ingredients and 100% peat free, the composts are very high quality and have a lovely soft texture; but using sustainable and natural ingredients such as these has wider environmental benefits too. Clearing the aggressive bracken from the hillsides above the farm improves the biodiversity of the whole area by providing habitat for ground nesting birds and butterflies (in particular the High Brown Fritillary). While sheep’s wool sheared each year from the neighbouring flocks helps provide an alternative source of income to hill farmers.
