Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ (daphne) £19.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil Rate of growth: slow-growing Flowering period: January to March Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection) Clusters of small, sweetly scented, pale pink flowers open from purple-pink buds in January among lustrous, lance-shaped, dark green leaves with yellow margins. The flowers are followed by spherical, red fruit. This evergreen shrub thrives in a sunny, sheltered position where its handsome, variegated foliage will brighten the winter garden. Try it at the edge of a mixed border or next to a path where its intoxicating fragrance can be appreciated. Garden care: Keep pruning to a minimum since the plant is susceptible to die-back. Where necessary after flowering, lightly trim to remove misplaced branches and maintain a compact habit.

We love raspberries here – for eating fresh, turning into puddings, making jam and we’ve even made wine with them!
This looks a lovely one to grow.

raspberry ‘Tadmoor’ (PBR) (raspberry – autumn fruiting) £5.99
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Other features: large, delicious raspberries from mid-to-late summer until the first frosts; the canes require little support Hardiness: fully hardy ‘Tadmoor’ is one of the last raspberries to crop each year, so it is an excellent choice if you want to prolong the season. A floricane raspberry, it will produce a high yield of firm, bright red berries that will be ready to harvest from mid-July to late summer. Garden care: Find a sunny spot and prepare a bed by clearing it of weeds and digging in lots of composted manure. The canes will need to be tied onto a sturdy support, so if you have the space, hammer in two robust tree stakes about 3m apart and string two or three heavy-gauge wires between them. Autumn fruiting raspberries tend to be shorter and bushier, so may not need as much height as the summer-fruiting types. In smaller gardens you can grow them against a fence or up a single tree stake. Dig a wide, shallow trench, sprinkle with bonemeal and plant the canes at 45cm intervals, (subsequent rows should be 1.8m apart), carefully spreading out the roots and back-filling with soil. You should be able to see the old soil mark on the stems, so aim to replant the same depth. After planting cut the canes back to around 15cm from their base and apply a generous layer of mulch in spring. As the new canes emerge, they can be tied onto their support as they grow. Feed during the growing season with a general purpose fertiliser and water regularly during the summer. You may need to protect the ripening fruit from being eaten by birds. After they have been growing for one year, all the canes should be cut back to just above ground level in late winter. These raspberries will often produce fruit in their first year.

Rosa Burgundy Ice (‘Prose’) (rose Burgundy Ice (floribunda)) £12.49
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to October Other features: excellent cut-flowers Hardiness: fully hardy The deep plum coloured flowers have a velvety texture and a light, sweet scent – and if dead-headed regularly, they will continue appearing throughout the summer. Magnificent with rich purples, soft pinks and silver. All our roses are grown in an open field and then dug up when the weather conditions are right in October or November. Some suppliers send out their roses as ‘bare root’ plants (ie without pots or compost), but we pot ours up as it helps to keep the roots hydrated and in good condition. As they are dormant throughout the winter, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don’t be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when you take them out of their pots. The roses can be kept in their pots throughout the winter provided they are kept well fed and watered, however ideally they should planted out as soon as possible. They will already have been cut back so no further pruning will be required, apart from snipping off any tips that have died back. Routine pruning can begin in late winter the year after planting. Garden care: If planting in winter, choose a frost-free spell when the soil is not frozen. Roses are quite deep-rooted plants so dig a deep hole roughly twice as wide as the plants roots and mix in a generous amount of composted organic matter. A top-dressing of a general purpose fertiliser can be worked into the surrounding soil and we also recommend using Rose Rootgrow at this stage to encourage better root development. This is particularly important when planting into a bed where roses have previously been grown as Rose Rootgrow is said to combat rose sickness (aka. replant disease). Remove the plants from their pots and gently spread out the roots before placing them in the centre of the hole. Try to ensure that the ‘bud union’ (the point where the cultivated rose has been grafted onto the rootstock, and from where the shoots emerge) is at soil level. You can judge this quite easily by laying something flat, like a spade handle or bamboo cane, across the top of the hole. When they are at the right height, back-fill the hole, firming the soil down gently before watering the plant well. Water generously until well established, and apply a specialis

A beautiful shrub for your garden. Impressive winter flowers

Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’ (mahonia) £24.99
Position: full sun to full shade Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: August to October Flower colour: bright yellow Other features: the flowers are followed by spherical, blue berries Hardiness: fully hardy Just released onto the market, this is the first Mahonia to have spine-free leaves, which means that they can be planted near to paths or doorways where you may brush past them. ‘Soft Caress’ is a compact, evergreen shrub, so it is ideal for larger pots, where it will provide year-round interest. Alternatively, it will make a fine addition to either a sunny or partially shaded border. Garden care: Every second year after flowering prune specimens grown as groundcover to just above ground level to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Mahonia ‘Cabaret (PBR)’ (mahonia) £14.99
Position: full sun to partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist or well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: August to November Hardiness: fully hardy This delightful new introduction has only recently become available, so we are one of the first to offer it for sale in the UK. It has the same glossy, holly-like, evergreen foliage, that you would expect to see on a Mahonia, but this compact variety produces its flowers from the end of summer and all the way through autumn. These appear initially as elegant racemes smothered with bright orange-red buds, that open from the base of the spike to reveal cheerful yellow flowers. Once the flowers have faded, bluish-grey berries form, which contrast beautifully with the winter foliage. Garden care: Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring.

Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ (mahonia) £12.99
Position: full or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist or well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: November to March Hardiness: fully hardy Slender spikes of pale yellow flowers appear from November to March, above rosettes of large, handsome, dark green, holly-like leaves. The flowers of this lovely, upright, evergreen shrub have a fragrance reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley, and seem to glow in the wintry sunlight. They are followed by bunches of highly ornamental, round, deep purple berries. This mahonia makes a lovely focal point for a shady spot in the garden, where its glossy, architectural leaves can be appreciated all year round. Give it space, as its leaves will spread, and conceal its long ‘legs’ with spring- flowering bulbs and small, shade-loving perennials. Although it prefers shade, it will tolerate sun as long as the soil remains moist. Garden care: Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring while it is getting established. No pruning required.
