Mexican giant hyssop
Mexican giant hyssop was £5.99 now £4.99
Position: full sunSoil: well-drained, fertile soilRate of growth: average Flowering period: July to OctoberHardiness: hardy (borderline)Hyssops are great for adding vertical accents to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush and pointed, aromatic fresh green leaves that are attractive to butterflies and bees. They are short-lived though, and may need replacing every few years, especially after a cold or wet winter. Blue Fortune has loose spires of lilac-blue flowers from July to October and peppermint-scented leaves. This upright, bushy perennial is perfect for the middle of a sheltered, sunny border. Try it as part of a Mediterranean scheme, with grey-leaved plants, or among ornamental grasses.Garden care: Don’t cut back the faded flower-stems in until early spring, as  they provide interest in the winter months. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring.

This is a top quality bit of kit. It is handmade from hand-forged steel with a solid 140mm ash hand grip. I’ts great for raking and cleaning in tight little spaces.Size – 330 x 60 x 180mmThe Dutch are rightly regarded as makers of the finest gardening tools. The two best are Sneeboer and de Wit. Sneeboer were founded in 1913, but De Wit dates back to1898. The 4th generation of De Wits now run the business; one is a trained wood turner, the other trained as a blacksmith. Both Sneeboer and De Wit use traditional techniques, but different materials. Sneeboer use stainless steel and de Wit use carbon steel. Carbon Steel is naturally tougher than Stainless steel and is not prone to metal fatigue like Stainless Steel.De Wit burnish their steel. This not only helps to protect it for longer but gives it a patina that blackens it – just like traditional English tools from the Edwardian era.All De Wit tools have turned hardwood handles of oiled Ash. Ash is not only very strong but resists shock better than woods like oak or beech, which is why it is always used for Axe handles. The result is a beautiful tool to hold in the hand but rugged and durable. They feel so natural to use that they are like an extension of theperson that uses them. These tools will give you a lifetime of use, until you hand them on.

rose Cornelia (hybrid musk)
rose Cornelia (hybrid musk) was £10.99 now £9.99
Position: full sunSoil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: July to SeptemberFlower colour: pink-tinted, coppery-apricotOther features: excellent cut-flowersHardiness: fully hardyLarge clusters of fragrant, double, pink-tinted, coppery-apricot flowers from June to September and dark-green leaves. This vigorous, repeat-flowering, shrub rose makes an excellent specimen plant or informal, flowering hedge for a fertile, moist but well-drained site. The fragrant blooms, renowned for their resistance to rain, make excellent cut-flowers.Garden care: Before planting shorten thick roots to 25cm (10in) and reduce top-growth to an outward-facing bud 8-15cm (3-6in) above ground-level. Plant during a frost-free spell, incorporating well-rotted organic matter and a balanced fertiliser into the planting hole. Ensure that the ‘bud union’ (the bulge at the base of the shoots) is 2.5cm (1in) below the soilAll our roses are field grown. In October/November they are dug up and potted. However, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don’t be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when winter planting. Some suppliers send out ‘bare root’ plants unpotted, but we don’t as it is easier to manage them on the nursery in pots.
