The tall upright flower stems bear clusters of pinky-red flowers in late spring and summer. These bob happily above the long, bluish-green, evergreen foliage. It is easy to grow and the bees and butterflies will love you for it. Garden care: Dianthus should be trimmed back lightly after flowering to promote new basal growth. Prune more closely in spring, as new shoots emerge to maintain a tidy shape. To maintain healthy growth, it is important to make sure the plants are protected from excessive winter wet.

In mid- to late spring, the bare branches are covered in golden male catkins which emerge from soft silvery furry buds. Makes a superb addition to winter cut-flower arrangements. An ideal tree for the small garden, these mini standards will also look good planted in a pot on the patio. They have a clear stem approximately 40cm tall. Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. They form in clusters in the leaf axils along the length of the stems, so when in bloom they really put on a great show, and if a stem is cut for the vase, it will fill the room with their perfume. Mainly evergreen the leaves are lustrous and dark green, so will add structure and form all throught the year. Its perfect for a partially shady border, or a woodland garden. Garden care: Keep pruning to a minimum since the plant is susceptible to die-back. Where necessary after flowering, lightly trim to remove misplaced branches and maintain a compact habit.

From mid spring to midsummer, narrow goblet-shaped, fragrant flowers emerge from slender, dark burgundy buds. These open to slightly twisted petals which are burgundy on the outside and paler on the inside. A glorious deciduous magnolia that makes a lovely specimen for a small garden with acidic soil. Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in midsumer. Plant in a sheltered spot, adding plenty of peat to the planting hole. Mulch in spring with manure and leafmould, especially on dry soils.
