Autumn planting asparagus

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Asparagus needs a well prepared bed. It’s a long term crop that doesn’t like being moved or disturbed. Ensure the bed is weed free and especially free of any nasty perrenials like couch grass that will disturb the roots when you weed. An edged bed will help keep weeds out and be a good area to create a raised bed.
It needs mulching in the autumn. Seaweed can be used, but other mulches will be acceptable. It is shallow rooted so do not hoe unless you can be very careful.

What can you plant now?

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

pak choi, beetroots, carrots, turnips.
In august plant your Arctic king and ‘all year round’ lettuce – keep it under a cloche in winter and you should have good crops.

You can sow peas again – all maincrop, mangetout and sugarsnap can be planted from now until end of July. Time to get another row or two in if you have some room.

When the weather is like it has been the plants are as confused as anything else by the hot, cold, wet, dry weather mix so just keep trying things.

If you can provide cloche cover then Komatsuna, Mizuna, Mibuna, Pak Choi, Choy Sum, Chinese Cabbage and any other oriental brassicas you can find will produce a winter harvest.
