rose (shrub)
rose (shrub) £12.99
Position: full sunSoil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: June and SeptemberFlower colour: light pinkOther features: excellent cut flowersHardiness: fully hardyBeautiful, light pink blooms which are large and exquisitely formed – the petals turn up at the edges to form a shallow saucer filled with smaller petals. One of the most beautiful, repeating flowering English roses available with a strong, old rose fragrance. An excellent garden shrub that is medium in height and bushiness with attractive foliage and suffers very little from diseases.Garden care: Before planting shorten thick roots to 25cm (10in) and reduce top-growth to an outward-facing bud 8-15cm (3-6in) above ground-level. Plant during a frost-free spell, incorporating well-rotted organic matter and a balanced fertiliser into the planting hole. Ensure that the 'bud union' (the bulge at the base of the shoots) is 2.5cm (1in) below the soil.Goes well with: Alchemilla mollis, Pulmonaria officinalis 'Sissinghurst White', Hesperis matronalis, Chionodoxa luciliae Gigantea Group, Allium sphaerocephalon, Clematis 'Etoile Violette'All our roses are field grown. In October/November they are dug up and potted. However, they will not produce any new roots until spring, so don't be surprised if the compost falls away from the roots when winter planting. Some suppliers send out 'bare root' plants unpotted, but we don't as it is easier to manage them on the nursery in pots.
African daisy
African daisy £5.99
Position: full sunSoil: moderately fertile, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: June to SeptemberHardiness: Frost hardy (needs winter protection in cold areas)A popular, spreading perennial, with cheerful, open daisies of palest lilac or white with purple centres. The back of each petal are a darker smoky lilac, and as the flower opens and closes with the sun, this contrast adds to the plant's charm. This is one of the hardiest osteospermums, and it keeps on producing an uplifting display of flowers from early summer through to autumn. It looks lovely planted en masse in containers on a sunny terrace, or in a wide, herbaceous border. Garden care: Protect plants in frost-prone areas and lift and divide congested clumps in autumn or spring.

Position: full sunSoil: fertile, moist well-drained soilRate of growth: fast-growingFlowering period: July to AugustHardiness: fully hardyOne of the main reasons for growing chives is to harvest the edible leaves, which enhance the flavour of many savoury dishes. tobacco plant
tobacco plant £3.99
Position: full sunSoil: fertile, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: June to SeptemberFlower colour: white fading to shades of pinkOther Features: contact with the foliage may cause skin irritationHardiness: half hardy annual Often grown as a perennial in warmer climates, in the UK it should be treated as an annual to add oomph to your summer bedding display. The small flowers appear in early summer a creamy white and gradually fade to pink and darken as they mature to a deeper rose. As you will usually have young and old flowers on the plant at the same time it creates a glorious, multi-coloured effect.Garden care: Keep the soil or compost moist by watering regularly during dry spells and feed with a balanced fertiliser every fourteen days. Although usually grown as an annual, plants that are protected with a dry mulch may survive mild winters where temperatures only occasionally fall below -5°C (23°F)
