orchid-cymbidium
orchid-cymbidium £29.99
One of the easiest orchids to care for, these are great for beginners, and with a flowering period of up to a couple of months, what more could you ask for. Each year in winter or early spring, upright flower spikes will emerge from amongst their strappy foliage. The tops of these spikes are covered with their gloriously exotic-looking flowers. Each of our Cymbidiums will currently have two flower spikes, which carry at least seven buds or flowers on each spike. The colour of the flowers may vary according to availability, and they will be delivered to you (or your lucky loved one) in a matt gold pot.Position: They like to be kept in a spot with bright, filtered light with good air circulation in summer and then moved to the sunniest spot you can find in winter. They need cool evening temperatures (min 10C) to produce a bumper crop of flowers. Try to keep them away from central heating radiators if you can. They love humidity, so a bright kitchen or bathroom would be ideal.Soil: Specialist orchid compostWater: Keep the compost moist during the warmer months, but in winter you should reduce the amount it gets, and only water them occasionally. Ideally when watering, you should let them stand in a tray of water (or kitchen sink) so they can soak up as much as they like for an hour or two. Afterwards, let the excess water drain away completely. It is always best to give them a a good soak when they get quite dry, rather than watering little and often. Their preference is for soft, tepid water.Humidity: Mist the leaves with water a couple of times a day, especially if they are in a heated room.General care: Feed them with a specialist orchid fertiliser every third time you water to help keep them in tip top condition. They do not mind being overcrowded in their pots, so you only need to repot them when the growth starts to suffer. They usually only flower once a year, but you can help make the flowers last longer by turning down the heating a few notches.Plants will be sent out with care instructions. If you order other items and wish to receive these before the date selected for your cymbidium you will need to select split delivery in the shopping wheelbarrow.

jasmine
jasmine £19.99
Most people love jasmine, and few can fail to be bowled over by their heady scent when they are in full flower. The dark, glossy green leaves perfectly highlight the clusters of pink buds and white blooms that open to look like little Christmas stars. These are twining climbers which are around 30cm (12in) tall. They will be delivered in a matt white pot which will compliment the flowers. When they grow up, they would be ideal for covering the wall of an unheated conservatory. Generally flowering in late winter or early spring, we have asked these ones to flower a little earlier for Christmas and …. hey presto!Position: They need lots of light, with some direct sunSoil: John Innes No.2 compostWater: Thirsty plants these, so keep the compost moist but not waterlogged throughout the summer. You can water them a little less often in winterHumidity: Mist the foliage with water frequently to prevent them getting too dryGeneral care: Enjoy them as indoor plants throughout the winter and then when the temperatures start to rise you can move them to a sheltered spot on the patio if you wish. Outside, they will prefer a sunny spot, but they will also tolerate light shade. For best results you should feed them once a month with a low nitrogen liquid fertiliser during the growing season. They will need support for their climbing stems, but if they get too boistrous, you can trim them immediately after flowering. Flowering will settle down to its more usual routine within a year, so your next batch of flowers should emerge in late winter or early spring 2010. Dont forget to move them back inside for winter.

cascading-phalaenopsis-moth-orchid
cascading-phalaenopsis-moth-orchid £19.99
These are really elegant plants which look good in almost any setting. They are universally loved, and because of this they make great presents. Phalaenopsis orchids produce big, flattened flowers up to 5cm across, which are borne on arching stems. As these are not held upright with a stake, the flowers cascade over the side of the pot giving them a softer feel. The flowers will last for several weeks, and you will get around 14 buds or flowers on your plant. They are delivered in a 16cm square pot with a gloss black finish. The colour of the flowers may vary according to availability.Position: They will thrive in good light, but prefer some shade from direct sun. Try to keep them away from central heating, but they are more tolerant of this than most other orchids. They love humidity, so a bright kitchen or bathroom would be ideal.Soil: Specialist orchid compostWater: Keep the compost moist during the warmer months, but in winter you should reduce the amount it gets, and only water them occasionally. Their preference is for soft, tepid water.Humidity: Mist the leaves with water occasionally, especially if they are in a heated room.General care: Don’t worry if the roots grow outside the pot. In their native environment, they grow in the crooks of branches, and use these aerial roots to absorb water from the air. They do not mind being overcrowded in their pots, so you only need to repot them when the growth starts to suffer. They usually only send up flower spikes once a year, however you may encourage a second flush of flowers to form more quickly if you trim back the stem to just above the first node immediately after they have finished flowering. They prefer even temperatures, so try not to have big drops at night time.Plants will be sent out with care instructions. If you order other items and wish to receive these before the date selected for your phalaenopsis you will need to select split delivery in the shopping wheelbarrow.

Here we have chosen an early flowering variety, which has been ‘forced’ to be perfectly in bud and flower for Christmas. Three of these lovely bulbs will be potted up and shipped out in a pot with a glossy pink finish. A great gift for someone with a garden as the bulbs can be planted outside after they have finished flowering.Position: As the buds are fully developed, they will be happiest in a really bright spot.Soil: Pot up into John Innes No. 2 compostRate of growth: averageFlowering period: March and April Other features: all parts of the plant may cause a mild stomach upset if ingested; contact with the bulbs may cause skin irritation Hardiness: fully hardyGarden care: After all the flowers have died off, you can move them outiside. Try to find a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained, moderately fertile soil and using gloves to avoid skin irritation, plant bulbs 10-15cm (4-6in) deep and at least 8cm (3in) apart. They also do very well in pots on a patio, especially when planted together with spring-flowering pansies and bulbs. In subsequent years their flowering time will settle down and they will produce their flowers in early spring. Please note that if you are ordering this item we will take full payment when you place your order so that stock is reserved for you. The hyacinths will then be despatched to you to arrive between the dates from the delivery period you select.
