Cherry Rubi is a sweet cherry – perhaps the best we have tasted! A self-fertile tree that will become covered in large, delicious red cherries ready to pick in early July. Cherries are such a well loved fruit it is surprising that they are not more widely grown in our gardens. Perhaps people have been discouraged by childhood memories of giant unmanageable trees – if so then you will be delighted with our Cherry Rubi grown on Gisela 5 rootstock. Gisela 5 is one of the latest commercial cherry rootstocks and produces a more compact tree with good crops of fruit. The rootstock provides the gardener with a far more controllable tree that easily adapts to a wide range of soil types including those not previously considered suitable for cherry trees. Rubi therefore has a higher resistance to some diseases associated with cherry growing – for example verticillium wilt – and a greater likelihood of good crops on a regular basis. This is because Gisela 5 regulates the auxins in the tree which promote uniform flowering, pollen tube growth, fruit set and helps prevent premature leaf drop.
