You can plant garlic in the autumn and this gives it a good start! Always buy garlic specifically for planting – the stuff in the shops may grow but it’ll probably be from a warmer country and won’t do as well as the types intended for growing here in the UK.
Garlic is fairly easy to grow. Get the cloves planted in and you should find it mostly looks after itself. It needs weeding so make sure you keep on top of the weeds as these will take up water and can block sunlight.
If you have never grown garlic before, please make sure you separate the bulbs into individual ‘cloves’ before planting – do not plant the whole bulbs together! .
It should be grown in full sun – so no shady damp corners for this plant! It will need as much sunshine as possible to do well! .
The secret to growing garlic is to plant it in mid October rather than wait until the spring. This is for cooler climates like the UK, in sunnier areas planting in Spring might well do a good job too!

Prepare the soil well with some well rotted compost or manure, sand to ensure it’s well drained and some bone meal to give it a good start!
It will also need feeding once or twice a month with a general purpose fertiliser like Growmore.
How far apart should you plant your garlic cloves? Space them about 10cm apart. If you are planting rows, space each row 45cm apart.
