Avoid plants named for the Isle of Wight… As the soil there is very chalky and if they’ve been grown there then they are unlikely to do well in your soil.

Garlic like Lautrec Wight won’t do well on an acid soil.

The best varieties for acid soil are thought to be Thermidrome and Germidour.

The Zuider Zee Museum in Enkhuizen is where you can eat
kippers straight out of the oil drum that they are smoked in.

A compact annual form producing whorls of pinkish purple flowers around the
upright stems throughout summer. Highly attractive to bees, butterflies and
other beneficial insects, it is easy to grow and will often be in bloom within
a few months of sowing. The flowers are edible and look very pretty sprinkled
over salads or puddings, while the crushed foliage can be used to repel insects.

Garden care:Under glass, surface-sow in late winter to late spring in deep
pots or trays filled with good seed compost and keep warm. Thin when large enough
to handle and plant outside in spring after gradually hardening off. Alternatively,
sow directly into a well-prepared seed bed in late spring or late summer or
early autumn and thin to 30cm intervals as they grow. Plants sown in late summer
or autumn will flower earlier than those sown in spring. Dead-head regularly
to prolong the flowering period.

In august plant your Arctic king and ‘all year round’ lettuce – keep it under a cloche in winter and you should have good crops.

You can sow peas again – all maincrop, mangetout and sugarsnap can be planted from now until end of July. Time to get another row or two in if you have some room.

When the weather is like it has been the plants are as confused as anything else by the hot, cold, wet, dry weather mix so just keep trying things.

If you can provide cloche cover then Komatsuna, Mizuna, Mibuna, Pak Choi, Choy Sum, Chinese Cabbage and any other oriental brassicas you can find will produce a winter harvest.
