The small dark green leaves form dense mounds, which makes it useful for informal hedging, or for adding structure to a mixed or herbaceous border. This is a fabulous, long flowering shrub, which will thrive in a hot, sunny position. Garden care: Trim lightly after flowering, cutting the older stems to the base and removing weak, spindly growth. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring.

Hardier than many of the other Penstemons, this semi-evergreen perennial has been bred to withstand heavy rains and strong winds. A cottage garden classic that will provide colour and structure for many months. Garden care: Remove the faded blooms regularly to prolong flowering. Apply a dry mulch around the base of the plant to protect the roots from frost damage in autumn. Leave the old foliage to protect the new shoots from frost and then cut it back by a third in spring.

This creates a distictive, two-tone effect. The flowers form in loose clusters on upright stems, which open from the base upwards over a long period from midsummer. A prolific flowerer, it is hardier than many other penstemons and is even said to be resistant to slug damage. The pretty colouring of the flowers means it blends easily with many other shades, but it looks particularly good with deeper pinks, lilac and purple. Garden care: Incorporate lots of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
