Harvesting the leaves regularly will prevent it bolting – particularly in warm weather. Growing Instructions: Sow thinly outside in spring into a well-prepared bed that has 1cm deep drills spaced at 30cm intervals. Keep the crop well watered (but not waterlogged) and thin to 7.5cm intervals for baby leaf or 15cm for larger plants. Later sowings can be done in autumn, provided the plants are kept protected by a cloche in colder weather. Alternatively grow in pots, which can be kept under glass in winter. Sow: April-May or Aug-Sept Harvest: June-August Approximate quantity: 100 seeds.

amaranth ‘Red Army’ (amaranth Red Army)

More vigorous than the green form, the leaves are best harvested when young to fully enjoy their distinctive tang. Alternatively the mature foliage can be treated like spinach and gently cooked. A colourful, versatile and tasty addition to the vegetable patch. A fast growing crop, you should have baby leaves ready to harvest within approximately 4 weeks. Growing Instructions: Surface sow thinly outside in spring into a well prepared bed and gently rake the seeds in. Keep the crop well watered (but not waterlogged) and thin to 5cm intervals for baby leaf or 15cm for larger plants. carrot ‘Amsterdam Forcing’ (carrot)

Position: full sun Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil The fastest of all carrot varieties to mature, this is a highly popular variety and one of the best choices for early and late sowings. Grown under glass in a cold frame or greenhouse it can be ‘forced’ for super-early crops. Pull young to enjoy their tender, sweet flavour at its best. Growing Instructions: Sow sparingly direct into shallow drills and cover lightly with soil. Cover early and late sowings with cloches. Thin seedlings carefully to 2cm apart, watering beforehand to avoid disturbing nearby roots, and working in the evening when carrot fly are less numerous. To further avoid carrot fly attacks, grow crops under horticultural fleece. The thinnings can be eaten raw, sprinkled on salads as a tender, delicately-flavoured garnish. Sow: March to May Harvest: June to August Approximate quantity: 1000 seeds.
