Each flower has a boss of golden stamens, which are surrounded by somewhat ruffled, pure white petals. A vigorous grower that is easy to look after, it will reach up to 2m tall and is ideal for training onto an obelisk or pergola. Garden care: In early spring cut back the previous year’s stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.

Each flower will grow up to 15cm across, and can last for up to 1 month, so the overall display is pretty impressive. Garden care: Remove dead and damaged stems before growth begins in early spring, cutting all remaining stems back to where strong buds are visible. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring

It is attractive in autumn when the white flowers, often tinged pink, are produced and the fruit from last year are turning red. The tree gets it’s name from these fruit, which look like strawberries but sadly don’t taste like them. An excellent tree for costal gardens or in a sheltered spot inland. Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting and stake well.

This astilbe is one of the taller varieties. It’s ideal for a moist bog garden or moist border, and the foliage contrasts particularly well with plants like rodgersia which have bolde r, coarse-textured leaves. Although it can grow in drier soils it does need to b e in a shady spot. Garden care:Newly plant ed astilbes need to be kept well watered until they are established. Lift and di vide large clumps every three or four years, discarding old, woody rhizomes. Mul ch with well-rotted organic matter in spring.

It will gradually spread to form quite big clumps, adding textural interest and colour to the planting scheme. Particularly valuable in coastal gardens, where they can form large colonies just above the high tide mark. This decorative plant is also very useful as the leaves are edible and the flowers will attract bees to the garden. Garden care: In January cover the crowns of two-year- old plants with special earthenware blanching pots or large plastic buckets, weighed down with bricks and surrounded with a mixture of well-rotted, garden compost and leaf mould. Once the blanched stems are 15-23cm (6-9in) high harvest by cutting below the crown.
