Lonicera x heckrottii 'American Beauty' (honeysuckle (Gold Flame))

Lonicera x heckrottii ‘American Beauty’ (honeysuckle (Gold Flame)) was £5.99 now £3.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: fully hardy Fabulously fragrant, pink-flushed, orange-yellow, tubular flowers from June to August, followed by red berries in hot summers. This vigorous, shrubby honeysuckle is semi-evergreen in milder winters, and looks lovely in a small cottage-style or wildlife garden. Since it doesn’t have the twining branches found on other varieties, it will need to be tied with garden twine to an upright support. Garden care: Cut back established plants after flowering, removing a third of the flowering shoots. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in early spring.

Verbascum bombyciferum 'Polarsommer' (mullein)

Verbascum bombyciferum ‘Polarsommer’ (mullein) was £5.99 now £4.99
Position: full sun Soil: poor, well-drained, alkaline soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to August Flower colour: butter yellow Hardiness: fully hardy (but short-lived) An attractive rosette-forming biennial that is covered in silky silver hairs. In summer tall spikes of saucer-shaped, butter yellow flowers appear above white-woolly basal leaves. A stunning plant for the back of a sunny border or planted in dramatic swathes in an island bed. Garden care: Mullein moth caterpillars can be a problem, so look out for them in early June and pick them off as soon as they appear. Remove faded flower-spikes. Apply a thick 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch around the base of the plant in early spring. It is worth keeping in mind that these plants are mainly biennial, so although they usually self-seed freely, the plant will only live for two years

The barn garden by Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith

The barn garden by Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith was £20.00 now £15.00
The Barn Garden is charming memoir, written about the creation of a garden that has been formed with the help of Tom’s parents, his family and friends. If nothing else it should encourage its readers to document their own progress with their gardens, and make their own scrapbooks – however modest the endeavour. Apart from being a wonderful documentary record of the garden, the book contains fabulous photographs the garden in all seasons by Andrew Lawson and Marianne Majerus, and the text gives a fascinating insight into Tom’s ideas about design and the way he combines plants. Its an easy and inspiring read, written by a designer at the top of his game. All the profits from the book go to charity.
