Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil, Rate of growth: slow-growing Flowering period: May to June Flower colour: white flowers with a purple-red flush outside Other features: all parts of the plant including the seed are highly toxic if ingested; contact with the sap may cause skin irritation Hardiness: fully hardy A compact, evergreen shrub that forms mounds of leathery, dark green foliage, and in late spring and early summer, clusters of white flowers that have a reddish purple flush on the outside. These form at the tips of the branches, have a delicious scent and are followed by rounded red fruits. It is a wonderful plant to include in a mixed border or woodland garden, ideally close to a path or entrance so you can enjoy the scent of the flowers every time you pass. Garden care: Keep pruning to a minimum, but if necessary you can lightly trim it back immediately after flowering. Apply a generous mulch in spring, which will help keep the roots cool.

This collection contains 60 large plug plants – 20 of each of the following. Grown in individual plug cells, each plant measures about 5 – 7 cm tall (from the base of the root to the top of the plant). They can be grown on or planted straight out into the garden after the risk of frost has passed. Alcea ‘Chaters Double Mixed’ From rounded buds, many-petalled flowers open upwards from the base of the sturdy, upright stems. The blooms are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects and are particularly ornamental. Grows to 2.5m. Delphinium ‘Guardian Mixed’ Relatively compact in habit, these stout delphiniums are now widely grown by cut-flower specialists, because of their ability to bloom so quickly after being transplanted. They are however equally useful in the border, providing magnificent colums of colour for several weeks from early summer. Grows to 1.2m. Digitalis ‘Dalmatian Mixed’ A breakthrough in breeding has produced these new ‘Dalmatian’ foxgloves, which will usually flower in their first year. They form tidy clumps of foliage, but it is for the wonderful spires of thimble-like flowers that open upwards from the base of the spike in summer, that they are best-loved. Grows to 60cm.
