Bertolini BT190 Front-Tine Cultivator with Reverse Drive (Showroom Model) £379.00
The Bertolini BT190 benefits from top-notch Italian engineering solutions, and as such is the obvious choice for the more exacting domestic gardener or allotment enthusiast. Driving this high-performance, high-specification tiller is a powerful 5.4hp (182cc) four-stroke overhead-valve engine from Emak; the K700H. Overhead-valve engines have become hugely popular in recent years, as they run cleaner, cooler and quieter than traditional side-valve units, as well as being significantly cheaper to run. Power from the engine is delivered to the tines through an oil-bathed chain-drive; a premium feature that not only optimises torque-transfer, but also works to greatly extend the machine’s service-life. Bertolini have included a reverse gear, so you’ll have no trouble freeing the tiller in the event it becomes dug-in. Thanks to its heavy-duty riveted-steel rotors and high-torque transmission, the Bertolini BT190 Front-Tine Cultivator will make light work of the most stubborn soil-types. A rotor-guard and a handlebar-mounted rotor-brake lever combine to maximise user-safety. Some petrol cultivators can be awkward to control and tiring to use – not so the Bertolini BT190: it features ergonomic, height-adjustable handlebars and a convenient multi-function lever, both of which combine with its relatively lightweight design (47kg) to ensure you’ll have no handling problems. A front transport-wheel facilitates easier site-to-site movement. Built to withstand the rigours of heavy-duty use, the Bertolini BT190 is constructed around a robust all-steel chassis and is fitted with a reinforced transmission guard. Mountfield HP46R Petrol Rear-Roller Lawnmower (Showroom Model) £279.00
A powerful, robust and sensibly-priced machine, the Mountfield HP46R is equipped with a full-width rear roller, which not only allows you to create a traditional striped finish, but also makes it easy to mow along lawn edges. Its easy-starting 100 cc Mountfield RM45 engine guarantees excellent long-term reliability; while its hand-push design makes it easy to control and manoeuvre, so it will prove a great choice if you have trees, shrubs and awkward corners to negotiate. The Mountfield HP46R Rear-Roller Lawn Mower has been built to last, with its rugged powder-coated steel deck and hard-wearing ball-bearing wheels both contributing to longevity. Thanks to its 46cm width-of-cut, this model is best suited to lawns up to around 1600m2. Dependable and easy to use, the Mountfield HP46R also features a five-stage cutting-height (20 – 70mm), which cuts low enough to produce a fine, formal finish, while also allowing you to leave certain sections of your lawn longer where desired. A generous 55-litre grass box has been included for reduced downtime.
Hayter Spirit 41 Petrol Push Rear Roller Lawnmower (Code: 617J) (Showroom Model) £269.00
This easy-to-use petrol roller-mower from Hayter is a push-type machine with a compact 410mm cut, so it’s well worth considering if you’re looking-after a smaller lawn with restricted access. Key amongst many impressive features is its 155cc Briggs & Stratton 450-Series engine; a four-stroke vertical-type unit with an aluminium muffler for rust-resistance; and an oil-foam air-filter for optimum engine protection. B&S’s Prime ‘n’ Pull technology ensures just the right amount of fuel is sent to the carburettor for dependable, flood-free starts. The Hayter Spirit 41 has a full-width ribbed rear-roller, which produces a pleasing striped effect, while also providing stability during edgework. It can be used with or without its 55-litre grass-catcher, depending on the conditions; and it offers superior performance in terms of both cut and collection, thanks to it series of aereodynamic front-mounted fins. Equipped with a seven-stage single-lever cutting-height, which can be set as low as 13mm, the Hayter Spirit is capable of producing a beautifully close-cut formal finish. It has a cutter-bar friction disc which works to protect the crank should the blade strike a solid object; and it’s built around a premium-quality aluminium skeleton chassis which provides a strong and durable cutting-platform that will not rust. The mower-deck on this model is lined with smooth ABS plastic for optimised under-deck airflow and reduced blade noise. The grass-collector is made from fabric, so it can be collapsed for storage; and the wheels are mounted on ball-race bearings for smoother motion and improved longevity when compared to cheaper bush-mounted wheels.
STIHL FS55 R Light 0.8KW Brush Cutter (Showroom Model) £229.00
If you appreciate top-quality German engineering and have an unruly garden to keep in check, then the Stihl FS55-R will prove a fantastic buy. Its high-powered 27.2cc (1.0hp) engine incorporates Stihl’s latest stratified-charge technology. This means that fuel-wastage during the charge-cycle is severely limited, which in turn ensures rapid acceleration with reduced fuel-costs and a drastic reduction in harmful exhaust emissions. Getting the engine going could hardly be easier: you simply apply your required amount of choke; deliver some fuel to the carburettor via the primer-bulb; and then pull the starter-cord. The ignition resets to ‘on’ when the engine is stopped, so it’s always ready to be started. The fully-adjustable ‘loop’ handle on the Stihl FS55-R Light 0.75KW Brushcutter makes it ideally suited for use on adverse terrain and in awkward, space-restricted areas (for example, thinning-work between shrubs and bushes). It weighs a mere 4.9kg, so large-scale applications can be completed in comfort. An AutoCut bump-feed line-head is also included, with harness and metal blade available separately.
