Cytisus 'Zeelandia' (broom)

Cytisus ‘Zeelandia’ (broom) was £6.99 now £4.99
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid soil Rate of growth: average to fast-growing Flowering period: May and June Flower colour: cream and lilac-pink Other features: downy, mid-green seed-pods (on unpruned stems) Hardiness: fully hardy Masses of pinkish-orange and buff-coloured, pea-like flowers clothe the slender, arching stems of this rounded deciduous shrub in late spring and early summer. It will thrive in a sunny spot with well-drained soil and as it does not get too large, it is perfect for smaller gardens. Garden care: Pinch out the shoots of young plants to encourage the development of a bushy habit. It needs to be pruned each year after flowering to ensure a bumper crop of flowers in the following year. Reduce the flowered stems by a half, taking care not to cut into the old wood.

Pontederia cordata (pickerel weed)

Pontederia cordata (pickerel weed) was £9.99 now £7.99
Position: full sun Depth of water: 10-12cm (4-5in) Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: July to September Other features: Hardiness: fully hardy This handsome aquatic perennial is perfect for the sunny margins of a pond. It has large, lustrous leaves and in late summer closely packed blue flowerspikes. A valuable addition to shallow water, it will provide colour and interest long after many of the other aquatics have finished flowering. It is best grown in aquatic planting baskets filled with fertile, loamy soil in 10-12cm of water. Garden care: Contain in an aquatic planting basket lined with hessian. Before planting apply a 2.5cm top-dressing of pea shingle or gravel to prevent the top layer of the planting medium from clouding the water.

Weigela 'All Summer Red' (weigela / weigelia)

Weigela ‘All Summer Red’ (weigela / weigelia) was £12.99 now £9.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast Flowering period: April to October Hardiness: fully hardy This is a wonderful deciduous shrub that just keeps on giving. The funnel-shpaed flowers are a lush shade of red and they usually start appearing in mid-spring. The display does not skip a beat, but intensifies in early summer and continues all the way through to mid-autumn. It is compact enough for a pot, but you will also want to dot a few of these in the border. It is a must if you want strong colour over a really long period in summer. Garden care: Once established removing one or two of the older stems to the base in late summer, cutting back the flowered stems to strong shoots below the spent flowers.

Hydrangea macrophylla Schloss Wackerbarth ('Horwack') (PBR) (hydrangea)

Hydrangea macrophylla Schloss Wackerbarth (‘Horwack’) (PBR) (hydrangea) was £19.99 now £16.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: July to October Hardiness: fully hardy One of the most colourful of the new breed, this hortensia hydrangea produces impressive clusters of flowers, each of which consist of three colours. Like many hydrangeas, the flower colour will vary depending on the soil type, but primarily they are a hot pinkish red with a bluish purple eye (when grown in acidic soils) and splashes of lime green at the petal tips. If you want a showy and long-flowering shrub, then you won’t be disappointed. Garden care: Leave the old flower heads in place through the winter. As the new shoots start to emerge in spring cut back a third to a quarter of the previous seasons flowering stems to the base and cut back the remaining flower heads to the first pair of buds.

This compact, upright Japanese maple is an ideal specimen tree for a small garden. It is best grown in partial shade since the exquisite, variegated foliage scorches in full sun. Garden care: Add a top dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring.
