Ilex x meserveae Blue Angel ('Conang') (holly blue angel)

Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil Rate of growth: slow Hardiness: fully hardy This is a great evergreen shrub for adding year round structure and interest, but if there is a male holly nearby to cross pollinate the small, creamy white flowers in spring, it will also deliver a bright splash of seasonal colour with its glossy red berries, which appear in autumn. It is possibly more interesting than many of the other hollies as it has unusual colouring – the stems being a deep damson purple (nearly black), while the lustrous foliage is an attractive bluish green shade. It is ideal for hedging, or deterring unwanted visitors with its prickly leaves.
