Clethra barbinervis (Japanese clethra) is a large, bushy, tough, hardy, deciduous, medium-sized shrub with obovate leaves that are about 12cm in length and turns red and orange in autumn. It also produces small fragrant flowers in racemes in late summer and autumn which attracts butterflies and other insects. One of the more interesting things about this plant is its attractive bark. Corylopsis pauciflora, buttercup witch hazel is a dense, slow-growing shrub with red-tinged ovate leaves when young bearing fragrant, primrose yellow, bell-shaped flowers in spring that appear in short drooping racemes (2-5 flowers). Native to western Japan and Taiwan the bright green toothed leaves have distinctive sunken veining turning to shades of yellow to yellowish-green in autumn.
