The Hornbeam hedging plant is a very popular native species with very similar characteristics to Beech – in that it retains many of its leaves in winter (not quite as good as Beech) but they go coppery coloured (a bit less coppery than Beech – more of a brown/grey) – but this species has more deeply veined and pointed leaves and is very well suited to wetter soils. It’s a popular species to add in to native mixed hedging to give it some semi-evergreen quality and also very good as a single species hedge in a garden setting. Grows 20-40cm per year. It is a species that is really only suitable for free-draining soil – if your soil is wet/heavy clay, you should consider Hornbeam instead which has a very similar appearance but is better suited to wetter soils.
