Winter Planting Lettuce

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Winter Lettuce Thompson & Morgan. You can plant some types of lettuce even at this time of year.
Winter Gem Lettuce can be grown from September to January in a greenhouse or in a cold frame. This is perfect for ensuring you don’t have to pay money for expensive lettuce during the winter season. It’s a plant that grows well as low temperatures and shorter daylight hours which is essential for any winter plant.
A must for the gardener who’s trying to save money. A packet of seeds costs not much more than one lettuce will over winter and with 150 seeds in the packet that’s an awful lot of lettuces you could be growing!
It’s also something to keep you nipping out to the greenhouse during the winter months – as if you needed an excuse to get out of the house and into the garden!

During bright days ensure there’s ventilation.
Think how impressed you’ll be to sit down from January onwards to eat your own home grown lettuce!
