Over the last few years the cultivation of the hardy slipper orchid has made great progress and the production of reliable ranges of cypripedium are underway in Europe and North America. It grew on the high volcanic slopes that rise from the sea and in the course of time developed according to the local conditions and grew a long flower. Sadly when people started to settle on this glorious island the bug gradually became extinct and so with no bug to pollinate the plant the situation for the Hawaiian palm became critcial. Then two brave scientists risked life and limb to climb up to the last remaining plants growing on the vertical slopes and hand pollinated these last surviving palms. Now they have harvested seeds from the palms and with some of these seeds breeding programs have been set up to help this amazing plant survive.
