blue bamboo
blue bamboo £19.99
Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: fast growingLeaves: mid-greenCanes: blue with purple tints fading to yellowHardiness: frost hardy (may need protection in their first winter)A hardier, bluer variety that was found growing at altitudes above 2800m (8400ft) in the Himalayas. This bamboo is a relatively recent introduction to the UK where it is prized for its colourful canes. They emerge each year in early summer in shades of green and slowly become bluer over a period of a couple of years. They finally fade after a couple of years to a greeny-yellow with hints of purple. It has delicate looking foliage and a very upright habit so is great for adding vertical interest. As it is a clump forming variety it is not invasive, but it will spread to around 3m across. It looks stunning planted up in a large pot (just make sure you keep it well watered) or planted next to water.Garden care: It will thrive in a cool, moist, shaded position with protection from cold dry winds. Avoid very heavy soils that get waterlogged for long periods in winter. It can cope with snow and temperatures down to -9C in its native environment once it is well established, however it will need a little help to settle in here in the UK, so protect it with fleece for its first few winters.
hellebore
hellebore £9.99
Position: partial shadeSoil: heavy, neutral to alkaline soilRate of growth: average Flowering period: February to April Flower colour: white with red specklesOther features: all parts of the plant cause severe discomfort if ingested; the sap may cause skin irritationHardiness: fully hardyPretty, pendent or outward-facing, saucer-shaped, white with red speckles flowers from February to April and leathery, deep green leaves. This is an attractive variety which is perfect as a ground cover for areas of dappled shade under deciduous trees and shrubs. Like all hellebores they prefer a heavy, neutral to alkaline soil.A top tip from the Crocus crew is to cut back the old leaves down to the ground in January or February. This will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect and it also helps to get rid of foliar diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot.Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.
lily-turf
lily-turf £7.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soilRate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: August to November Flower colour: whiteOther features: deep-green grassy foliage Hardiness: fully hardySlightly slower growing that its more commonly seen blue form, this plant is definitely worth the wait. The deep green, strap-shaped foliage forms tight, evergreen clumps from which the poker-like white flowerspikes emerge in late summer and autumn. It is a low maintenance plant, which is tolerant of shade and drought, although it will flower better if it gets a little sun. It looks great when planted in big swathes underneath trees, where little else will grow, and is especially good at controlling erosion on steep banks and slopes once it has had a chance to become established. Garden care: In spring you can lift and divide large clumps.
