A superb midseason pear that is ready to pick around the first week in October. Known as a ‘butter pear’ as its velvety flesh lacks the grittiness found in some other varieties. For best results pick fruits whilst still firm and they’ll store at least until Christmas. Bring them indoors as needed and they will ripen in a day or so when the rich aromatic flavour and delicious juiciness can be enjoyed to the full!Pears are one of the easiest of garden fruit trees with very few pest, disease or other cultural problems. Famous for its fruits’ delicious aroma and flavour (like a gooseberry, but with a hint of apricot!) this superb mid-season variety is well worth its space in the garden. Bred in Finland, it is very hardy, and will produce a good crop of medium-to-large greenish-yellow berries. Supplied as 2 year old plants. Recommended for freezing. Being ready to pick from mid August, Grenadier is a very good alternative (or partner) to the later cropping Bramley. It’s an easy apple to grow as its steady growth makes it manageable in a small garden and it has few disease problems. Grenadier cooks superbly to a frothy puree and is wonderful in all apple desserts. Grown on M26 rootstock, to produce a tree height of approximately 2.5-3m (8-10′) after 10 years.(Britain has the best climate in the world for growing apples of the highest quality. Warm, summer days and cool summer evenings ensure that they develop excellent flavour and colour.) For an exceptionally sweet taste (almost honey-like!) look no further than Thames Cross. The fruit is large and attractive (yellow flushed with rose pink) and is produced in abundance in early to mid-September, even while the trees are still quite young.
