How are your runner beans doing?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

I’ve seen loads of people’s runner beans and some have been at the top of the poles and some covered in flowers. Mine are about half way up!

Claire’s video about planting them is interesting.

Remember to put the canes in first!
Beans like lots of good stuff in the soil – work in as much compost as possible.
I like the way she starts them off with a tie to the stick so they get started. Perhaps that steadies them and helps them get a good start?
I always put two seeds per pot. I don’t think it hurts and then if one does get eaten then it’s not a huge problem.

Thompson & Morgan just added these new products

Runner Bean 'Desiree' - 1 packet (50 seeds)

Runner Bean ‘Desiree’ – 1 packet (50 seeds) £3.69
In recent years we have introduced and developed vegetables that have achieved real steps forward in yield, flavour, space saving, disease tolerance; etc. This bean fits into this category and is outstanding in every way. Almost foolproof, it attains huge crops from a small area. Long, broad, completely stringless, very fleshy 25-30cm (10-12in) pods. Very heavy cropping, often averages 40 pods per plant. As it is a shy seeder there is more juicy fleshy edible area, which accounts for the exceptional flavour. Compared with other runner beans it is much more productive under dry weather conditions. White flowered.

Climbing roses

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Where could you plant some climbing roses in your garden? I’m sure you’ve got an arbour, or archway or gate that would look lovely with roses climbing around it.
You know how beautiful roses are with their large scented flower heads that start at fine buds and slowly burst open to reveal all their silky petals, imagine them growing around your door. Roses are very romantic and to have them climbing up and flowering looks really special.
When you plant them you fan out the stems so that they are nearly on the ground – don’t force them over but gently tie them down. If they are close to horizontal they should put up more stems which will give you a much better display.
Don’t plant too close to walls though as you’ll find that the base of a wall is very dry and plants won’t do very well against it. You also don’t want to be watering your wall when you water your plants! A structure like a wooden trellis or arbour can give your plant support. Use soft ties to fix the climber in to the support.

If you don’t have a structure ready for them to climb up consider buying in some trellis. You can get attractive tub boxes with trellis fixed to them. This would allow you to move the plant around – although the tub would be heavy and as it grows it would get heavier!
If you have a shed or bin area you would like covering up then fragrant soft roses up a trellis would hide them beautifully. In summer you could have the scent of the roses blowing gently across your garden too – as roses are not just beautiful to look at but scented too.
Roses do need pruning to ensure they stay neat and flower well every year. This is the same as basic rose pruning. You prune climbing roses in late autumn or in winter – don’t do it whilst the flowers are in bloom.
A climbing rose should flower all summer long. By comparison a rambling rose will only flower once. Deadheading your rose will encourage it to flower more.
As well as not having flowers in bloom that you would be cutting off you will also be pruning when the leaves have fallen off making it easier to see exactly which stems go where and in theory making the pruning process easier.
Wear gloves and be careful with any thorns. You might want to put rose prunings in the green bin for the council to compost, although shredding them is quite effective.
When pruning as well as shaping the plant and cutting it back you need to look out for and remove any dead, damaged shoots, diseased areas or spindly growth that doesn’t look right.
Tie in new shoots and then prune back the side shoots that have flowered this year by up to two thirds of their original length. As the plant ages you will want to cut out more dead wood from the plant in particular any older sections. Thin out the plant so it’s not too crowded.
Feed roses in the spring with specially bought rose fertiliser.
Jersey Plants Direct offer free delivery on everything.

Slug Control options

Slug Control at amazon uk

What slug control options are there?
You can in theory stop them with copper tape as they don’t like to cross it. Some people swear by broken egg shells, or you could just use Nemaslug Slug Killer! I’ve used it and it is well worth the money. It’s amazing to be able to plant things in your garden and not have slugs or snails eat them! You just water this stuff on and it lasts for weeks. If used at the start of the growing season it’ll get all your plants through the early stages so they’re big and healthy! Even when the slugs do start coming back they should be a lot smaller and there’ll be less of them. A friend has been using it for years and says she has fewer slugs now than ever before between applications. It’s so rewarding to grow things and not have to fight the slugs off with nasty slug pellets!

If you want to do slug control the old fashioned way then amazon have some slug pubs – fill with beer and the slugs come in and drown themselves in beer. Just use the cheapest value beer you can find – they will drink anything but why give them the good stuff.
