Nerine bowdenii (Guernsey lily)

Nerine bowdenii (Guernsey lily) was £3.99 now £2.99
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, well-drained Rate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: September to November Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection) Coming on strong at a time of the year when most plants are looking decidedly sorry for themselves, this bulbous perennial makes a wonderful addition to the mixed border. The flowers it produces are quite exotic-looking, a strong clear pink with a wavy edge to the petals. They top stout upright stems, which arise (usually before, but sometimes with) the low tufts of strap-shaped foliage. Tolerant of low temperatures provided they are not too wet, they originate from South Africa so will be happiest in a freely draining soil where they can bake in full sun. They flower best when they are congested, so will work well in pots and containers. Garden care: Plant shallowly outside with their neck just above the surface of the soil at 10 – 15cm intervals from April onwards. They are happiest in a dense clump, so once planted avoid disturbing the roots and only lift and divide them when they have outgrown their alloted space.

Nerine bowdenii 'Ella K' (Guernsey lily)

Nerine bowdenii ‘Ella K’ (Guernsey lily) was £5.99 now £3.99
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, well-drained Rate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: September to November Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection) The spidery white flowers form in clusters around the top of the tall stems in autumn. In colder regions, plant in pots and overwinter a cool greenhouse.

Nerine bowdenii 'Ostara' (Guernsey lily)

Nerine bowdenii ‘Ostara’ (Guernsey lily) was £5.99 now £3.99
Position: full sun Soil: fertile, well-drained Rate of growth: average to fast Flowering period: September to November Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection) One of the hardier forms, this beautiful nerine should survive outside all year round in sheltered gardens, provided the soil is not too heavy and wet. Their ruffled, shell-pink flowers are a delight, and they appear very late in the season adding some much-needed colour. In colder areas, they are best grown in a pot, so they can be overwintered in a cool greenhouse. Garden care: Plant shallowly outside with their neck just above the surface of the soil at 10 – 15cm intervals from April onwards. They are happiest in a dense clump, so once planted avoid disturbing the roots and only lift and divide them when they have outgrown their alloted space.

Lilium martagon var. album (turkscap lily)

Lilium martagon var. album (turkscap lily) was £7.99 now £5.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to July Hardiness: fully hardy Native to Swiss mountain meadows, this lily is easily grown in Britain. In June and July, tall stems play host to numerous small, white, turkscap lilies with yellow anthers, above whorls of dark green leaves. The flowers are highly scented, although it’s not the most pleasant smell. This lily will light up a dark corner of the garden and does best among shrubs or in woodland, where it should be left to naturalise. Garden care: Lilies are best planted in autumn when the bulbs are still plump, but they can still be planted in spring. Between August and March , choose a sunny spot where the plant can keep its feet in the shade. Plant 15 -20cm (6-8in) deep in a well-drained soil, enriched with well-rotted organic matter or leaf mould, using a marker to minimise any unnecessary disturbance. Stake with ring stakes or bamboo canes in spring before the flowers appear. Deadhead the faded blooms and cut the stems back to ground level at the end of autumn.
