Position: partial shade Soil: humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil with an acidic pH Rate of growth: average Flowering period: August and September Hardiness: fully hardy This makes a beautiful addition to the late summer and early autumn garden, when its spires of pink bell-shaped flowers open, emiting their deliciously spicy, clove-like fragrance into the air. The flowers of this deciduous, suckering shrub not only look and smell sublime, but they are also loved by bees and butterflies. It flourishes in partial shade, so is ideal for a woodland setting or lightly shaded shrub border. Garden care: In winter, while the plant is dormant, remove some of the older stems, leaving the strongest suckers to produce new growth in spring. After pruning apply a generous (5-7cm deep) mulch of well-rotted leaf mould around the base of the plant.
