Helleborus 'Verboom Beauty' (Christmas rose hellebore)

Helleborus ‘Verboom Beauty’ (Christmas rose hellebore) £14.99
Position: partial shade Soil: heavy, neutral to alkaline soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: November to January Hardiness: fully hardy This unique new hellebore is the first white-flowered form that has the potential to be in flower on Christmas day. If kept in a pot, it can be brought inside in November (to a bright spot well away from a radiator) and it should soon produce masses of buds that open over several weeks. After 4 – 5 weeks, it should be gradually acclimatised to outdoor temperatures and then planted out in the garden, where it may continue to flower intermittantly for another few weeks. This plant makes a great seasonal gift, but is equally useful for livening up a shady spot in the garden during the winter. Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.

Leptodermis oblonga 'Summer Stars' (PBR) (baby lilac)

Leptodermis oblonga ‘Summer Stars’ (PBR) (baby lilac) £14.99
Position: full sun to partial shade Soil: freely draining Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to September Hardiness: fully hardy The slender bell-shaped flowers of this pretty, low-growing shrub will offer several months of colour when they clothe the upright, red-flushed stems from midsummer onwards. Only recently introduced, it is going to be a popular addition to the garden, where it will settle in seamlessly to borders or pots. Easy to grow and undemanding of soil type (provided it is well-drained), the lilac-like flowers mix easily with pinks, purples and plums, and have a light perfume. Garden care: Remove dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.

Gardenia jasminoides 'Crown Jewel' (gardenia)

Gardenia jasminoides ‘Crown Jewel’ (gardenia) £14.99
Position: partial shade Soil: prefers moist, well-drained neutral to acidic soil Flowering period: July to September Rate of growth: average Other features: heavenly scented blooms Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) The creamy white flowers of this lush-looking evergreen shrub, have the most intoxicating scent, which will fill your garden or (if cut for the vase) home. This is one of the new breed of hardier gardenias, so in sheltered gardens it can be left outside in milder winters. The flowers are double, so have lots of petals and they appear in good numbers from midsummer to autumn. Garden care: Keep it potted up if your garden receives hard frosts so it can easily be moved between a sunny patio during the summer and an unheated conservatory or greenhouse in winter. Feed with a balanced liquid feed once a month and water freely with soft water during the growing season, but keep the compost reasonably dry throughout winter. Topdress or pot on in using ericaceous compost and lightly trim over-long shoots in mid to late spring.
