Lonicera x heckrottii 'Gold Flame' (honeysuckle (syn American Beauty))

Lonicera x heckrottii ‘Gold Flame’ (honeysuckle (syn American Beauty)) was £12.99 now £9.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: fully hardy Fabulously fragrant, pink-flushed, orange-yellow, tubular flowers from June to August, followed by red berries in hot summers. This vigorous, shrubby honeysuckle is semi-evergreen in milder winters, and looks lovely in a small cottage-style or wildlife garden. Since it doesn’t have the twining branches found on other varieties, it will need to be tied with garden twine to an upright support. Garden care: Cut back established plants after flowering, removing a third of the flowering shoots. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in early spring.

Passiflora caerulea (blue passion flower)

Passiflora caerulea (blue passion flower) was £12.99 now £9.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: July to September Hardiness: frost hardy (will need winter protection in cold areas) A really exotic-looking plant, with large white flowers and central filaments of purple, blue and white from July to September, followed by egg-shaped, orange-yellow fruit. The leaves are pretty, too; deeply lobed, dark green and glossy. This blue passion flower is a vigorous, trouble-free climber that thrives in hot summers and will quickly cover a sunny wall or fence. Ideal for a tropical planting scheme, it grows best at the base of a sheltered wall in full sun, although it will tolerate some shade. The fruit are edible, but not very tasty! Passion flowers are believed to represent the suffering of Christ on the cross and the mysteries of the Passion. The 17th century monastic scholar, Jacomo Bosio, describes ‘the column rising in the centre of the flower surrounded by the thorn of crowns (and) the three nails at the top of the column. In between, near the base of the column is a yellow colour about the size of a reale, in which there are five spots or stains (stamens) of the hue of blood evidently setting forth five wounds received by our Lord on the cross.’ Garden care: Choose three to five of the strongest shoots, tying them in to horizontal wires. Once the plant is established, cut back the flowered shoots immediately after flowering to within two or three buds of the permanent framework of the plant. In spring remove dead, misplaced or overcrowded stems.

The variegation appears mostly on the upper-most sections of the plant and is often not apparent on young plants. Garden care: Plant in a sheltered spot. Tie the main stems on to a series of horizontal, galvanised wires. In early spring, remove any crossing, diseased or overcrowded stems.

Phyllostachys nigra (black bamboo)

Phyllostachys nigra (black bamboo) was £49.99 now £24.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast growing Hardiness: fully hardy One of the most elegant bamboos, with polished, damson-black mature canes and dark green leaves. The slender, arching canes, which are dark green for the first two or three years, look perfect in a contemporary, minimalist garden particularly if the low-growing foliage is stripped. Although this is not one of the more vigorous and invasive bamboos, it is advisable to restrict the roots using a rigid, non-perishable barrier to prevent the plant from colonising adjacent plantings. Garden care: Plant in a large container or surround the roots with a non-perishable barrier that restricts the plant’s spread. Water regularly until established. Bamboos do not like competition, so are best planted en masse in a designated area of the garden.

This colourful variety looks great alongside the ebony-black canes of the black bamboo, Phyllostachys nigra. This aptly named coloured-stemmed bamboo is one of our ‘highly recommended plants’. Garden care: Plant in a large container or surround the roots with a non-perishable barrier that restricts the plant’s spread.

Phyllostachys bissetii (bamboo)

Phyllostachys bissetii (bamboo) was £29.99 now £24.99
Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil Rate of growth: fast growing Leaves: mid-green Canes: dark green, sometimes stained with purple Hardiness: fully hardy Vigorous and hardy, this decorative bamboo is one of the first to produce new canes each year. These canes appear in late spring or early summer and have a mainly upright habit, but do arch slightly. Their colour is green, but will sometimes have a purple flush, but over a period of several years, will fade to a yellow-green. They have a glossy finish and are clothed in rich green leaves, which cope well with adverse weather conditions. Initially forming really dense clumps, this bamboo is ideal for screening, but will spread with age. Garden care: Plant in a large container or surround the roots with a non-perishable barrier that restricts the plant’s spread.
