Allotment waiting list over 2000

CALLS are being made for more allotments to be created in North Tyneside as some aspiring gardeners are having to wait up to seven years to get one.

There are currently more than 2,000 people on the waiting list for plots in the borough, and the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners is demanding action to tackle that backlog

Allotment access improved

Allotment access to be improved AND extra allotments! Great news

The allotments, off Coleridge Road, on the Bournville estate, Weston, are currently only accessible by a footpath.

But a patch of rough ground and brambles will soon make way for an access road, as well as extra allotments.

North Somerset Council deemed the land unsuitable for other potential developments and handed it over to Weston Town Council for allotments.

Man in court for allotment thefts

A MAN has been charged following a probe into a spate of thefts from allotments in East Yorkshire.

Humberside Police discovered a large amount of garden and allotment tools and equipment in Scarborough, and asked victims of thefts to see if they could identify any of the property.

Good news for anyone who can claim their tools!
It pays to mark tools with a postcode and house number which can’t be easily removed

Gardens join for benefit

This idea is being put forward in Oxford to combine the majority of garden space in an area to make communal orchard and allotment
Sounds fantastic!

Six people have been working with Green city councillor Matt Morton to draw up a masterplan for the block of 97 houses on the block surrounded by Hurst Street, Bullingdon Road, St Mary’s Road and Leopold Street.

They believe that if neighbours pool their land to create a single growing area, it could provide fruit, vegetables, eggs, and honey for every household.

Allotments across the West Midlands may have ever-growing waiting lists but one site in Walsall is bucking the trend.


Broadway Allotments currently has 40 vacant plots, compared to other allotment sites in the region which have waiting lists of up to five years

Another council facing the realitites of having to cut costs


PLOT holders and community groups could take over the management of allotments as a council looks to cut costs.


Newcastle Borough Council is to carry out a review to find ways of reducing the £38,190 cost of running its seven allotment sites.


How much of this £38k is staff costs of the council?

Blane Valley Allotment group plans some great things!

THE Blane Valley Allotment group presented full details of its community allotment project at a public meeting in Strathblane Village Club last Saturday.

Duntreath Estate has offered a site for the project, behind the railway track on the outskirts of the village.

All allotments will be within walking distance of the village and there will also be a community garden.

A spokesperson for the group, said: “We think this shows real community spirit, generosity and forward thinking in today’s climate. The supporters of the allotment are very grateful and look forward to developing this relationship with Duntreath Estate.

“We believe that the project will have many benefits for the community.

“It will allow people to grow food locally, enable more social interaction, encourage intergenerational relationships, increase biodiversity, lower the carbon footprint for the village and help with skills development and educational projects for the local school and nursery.
