‘Buddy’ is the new everbearing strawberry that is taking the supermarket world by storm, and 2014 is the first year it has been offered to home gardeners to grow themselves. Everbearing Strawberries are great for spreading strawberry fruit production out. Starting slightly later than the Wimbledon peak, they have a big yeiled in mid to late July, but then keep going through August – peaking again in September and continuing to crop until first frosts! This makes eating and using the crops easier, not one huge glut! Everbearers have historically not been quite as good on the taste scores as traditional ‘June bearers’, but ‘Buddy’ breaks the mould here. Digitalis Illumination Pink is a fabulous and multi-Award winning new plant that really is a special addition to any garden. The undoubted star of Chelsea Flower Show 2012 where it was launched to great acclaim, and Winner of Best New Plant at that show, it’s not hard to see why. And we are pleased to have secured some larger grown on plants for our customers. Due to the persistence of plant breeder’s, this amazing new Foxglove has done what was thought to be impossible. It was successfully created by cross-breeding our common wild Foxgloves (Digitalis) with the exotic Isoplexis (Canary Island Foxglove) relative, which gives it a beautiful tropical colouration, and it’s distinctive petal and flower shapes too. Despite being called ‘Pink’, it’s centre is a lovely warm, orange-tinged tropical shade. What a fantastic Lily ‘Kushi Maya’ is – both from it’s extraordinarily unusual chocolate maroon and lime green flowers, but also from the rare and difficult hybridisation techniques that created it. For many years the wild species Lilium nepalense has been grown, but it could be problematic and was often only a small, weak rhizome. Pioneering Dutch breeders cross-pollinated it with today’s more well known Oriental (Stargazer) types, a cross that often does not work – but this time with the aid of some clever science it did, and what a result! ‘Kushi Maya’ is thus one very special Lily indeed – reaching up to 1M in year one, and 1.5M tall in 3-4 years, it is really quite straightforward to grow, unlike it’s wild parent. It produces strong stems of the most unusual and large lime green to lemon flowers, with a deep centre of contrasting chocolate to maroon purple, gentle hanging and nodding downwards. And to top it all, it is also highly fragrant, and fully hardy so will come back year after year bigger and better. The name ‘Kushi Maya’ is a term of endearment used towards Nepalese children, although it’s literal translation means ‘Happy Love’. Plant some happiness in your garden!
