Picking broad beans

It’s probably time to start picking some beans today. I know neighbour plots had their beans flowering by the time mine went out so they’ve already had shed loads of lovely fresh broad beans but I think mine will get their first picking today.

You can pick them when they’re small or leave them to grow a bit bigger, the danger being they may get too big and tough. You can tell when they’re ready as they dropp down instead of standing upright! Take care not to rip the plant as you remove pods.

I love broad beans – they’re great just as a vetetable side dish or served with hot crispy bacon!
