This lenten rose creates a stunning ground cover for areas of dappled shade under deciduous trees and shrubs. Like all hellebores, they prefer a heavy, neutral to alkaline soil.A top tip from the Crocus crew is to cut back the old leaves down to the ground in January or February. This will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect and it also helps to get rid of foliar diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot.Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.

Position: full sun or light, dappled shadeSoil: any fertile, moist but well-drained soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: April to JuneFlower colour: white with a pink flushOther features: attractive peeling barkHardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)A handsome deciduous shrub that can be used as a specimen plant, or incorporated into a shrub border where its pretty late spring and summer flowers can be seen at their best. These star-shaped blooms are white with a faint pink flush and they appear in slightly dangling clusters, which look especially good against the backdrop of dark green foliage. A native of woodland edges and scrub in the Philippines and Taiwan, it is tolerant of a little light shade as long as it is not too dry, but will flower best in full sun. It has an upright habit with arching stems, and as the branches mature they develop peeling bark, which can look like giant cinnamon sticks. In colder areas grow against a south facing wall or provide protection by tucking it in between other plants. Garden care: To encourage a bushy habit tip-prune young plants, either by pinching off the tips of soft shoots or by reducing long leading or lateral shoots by a third. Immediately after flowering, cut back the stems that have flowered to one or two healthy buds.

Position: full sunSoil: fertile, well-drained neutral to alkaline soilRate of growth: averageFlowering period: April to JulyFlower colour: white with a yellow eyeHardiness: fully hardyThe big, papery, white flowers, which appear from late spring, are flushed with yellow at their centre and look great against the grey-green foliage of this tough little evergreen shrub. Once established it becomes drought tolerant and it thrives in hot, sunny spots where little else will grow. It also copes well with salt laden wind so is a good choice for coastal gardens. In more favourable conditions, it is a very pretty, low-growing shrub, that works well as edging or filling a beautiful pot on the terrace.Garden Care: Prune in mid to late summer after flowering, cutting back any straggly stems.
