Hydrangea

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Hydrangea at Thompson & Morgan! These are a stunning plant for the garden and well worth adding one or two to your garden. They have really impressive blooms that are made up of lots of individual flowers all in one ball flower head. They’re pretty and make stunning cut flowers. Put one each in a tall narrow vase or arrange a large vase full of them.
We’ve included the ericaceous plant feeds that ensure they grow really well. Traditional hyrangeas show a colour change according to the soil type they’re in and it’s believed that planting nails under the plant will ensure you get blue flowers. Hyrangeas are stunning plants and will provide you with tons of cut flowers or if you prefer to keep them outside they make an impressive display for months on end in the garden. You can cut off the blooms as they die back and give the plant a light trim.

Christmas flowering – Chimonanthus comes to life in the dead of winter, its bare woody stems dripping with gloriously fragrant, pendent yellow flowers that are tinged with purple in the centre. As spring approaches, the fading flowers are replaced with new, young leaves that smother the once bare branches. This deciduous shrub can be treated as a specimen plant, part of a shrub border, or trained against a sunny wall.

Courgette seeds from Thompson and Morgan

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Thompson & Morgan have a large variety of courgette seeds available. Courgettes are easy to grow. Start the seeds off in a warm greenhouse or on the kitchen windowsill. Plant into bigger pots after they have a couple of leaves and when it’s not going to be frosty anymore you can plant them out. They like a nice rich soil and plant firmly so the stem doesn’t rock in the breeze. They’ll have beautiful yellow flowers behind which the courgette forms.
They’ll start cropped easily and you can feed them a liquid feed (eg seaweed feed) every week. You can get many different varieties including ball shape ones as well as traditional dark green long straight ones. If you don’t pick them when they’re small they will get bigger but they’re best eaten when young. If you love courgettes them 3 plants should do you – providing you’ve got a neighbour or like to make chutney for the odd occaisions you’ll have too many.
I love eating them just plain fried until they’re starting to go really dark. It’s a delicious sweet taste that you can also enjoy raw, turn into chutney or put into italian pasta sauces. You can roast them in the oven too!
They’re really great to eat and can be quite prolific in production! Water them well in hot weather and keep them moist as much as possible. They will spread quite a bit and the leaves can be a bit prickly sometimes.

They’re a fantastic vegetable that you can really taste the freshness of too.

Apple trees at Thompson and Morgan

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Apple trees available to buy at Thompson & Morgan.
I’m a big fan of people growing their own fruit. It’s not difficult to plant a tree or two and you can pick small varieties if you don’t have space. Fruit trees are fantastic value for money. You get a small crop at the beginning off them but each year they grow and grow and produce more fruit. You’ll easily repay the cost of the tree within a few years and there is nothing better than picking your own apples and eating them! They’ll taste so much fresher than any you can buy and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you grew it yourself. Planting instructions are included and are easy to follow.
Why not buy a neighbour a tree too and then you can start building up a whole orchard of trees on your street! A fruit tree can be bought as a gift – and if your neighbour doesn’t want to pick the apples then ask if you can!
Even if you don’t pick them in the middle of winter the birds will eat them as they fall to the ground – birds love crab apples too and these have very pretty blossom too!
Growing an apple tree is something we should all try and do!
Apples are delicious to eat raw, or cook them and use in pies of crumbles, press them and make apple juice or cider! One of my neighbours even has an apple tree in his front garden and it’s great to see it go from blossom in the spring to apples in the autumn and then get to see the amount of juice he gets from it!
There are many different varieties of apple tree available to buy online.
