livorno-citrus-pot £84.99
The enduring design of this simple pot with its double-banded surface has been used for hundreds of years to hold citrus plants. Look after the lawn in Autumn

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Autumn Lawn care hints:

You can scarify the lawn – this means removing some of the dead material that acts as a mulch around the gras on the ground. This can be done with a spring tine rake (A bendy one that won’t damage the ground). You can also get scarifying machines for big lawns. You can compost all the stuff you rake out.
Next you can aerate the lawn. You can do this by spiking a fork into the ground at regular intervals. It allows the water to drain more freely off and prevents moss and slimey species taking hold. It won’t solve very bad watre logging but on a general lawn can help improve the condition. You can do it with a special hollow tine fork – some peopel suggest brishing sand into the holes after too.

USe autumn specific lawn food to feed up the lawn.
Repair the bad bits! If you have bare bits the kids have worn or the dogs have destroyed then plant a bit of seed now. Remember to prepare the patch first!
If your edges look straggly sometimes digging out a rectangle of lawn and turning it round so the bad bit is in the middle of the lawn then can help. It’s easier to repair a bit in the middle than an edge!

Easy-Fill’ Hanging Baskets Garden Bargains Easyfill Hanging baskets

Each basket is a generous 14” (35cm) diameter and holds 12 litres of compost, allowing maximum root growth AND ensuring each plant reaches its full potential every single time. The ‘Lattice Gated’ planting holes take the guesswork out of how and where to plant and critically, allow you to plant from the outside in – so there’s no crushing or mushing of the roots and no tearing or bruising of the leaves!

Simply pass the root-ball through the hole, slide in the ‘Lattice Gate’ and lock into place. Once in position, the ‘Gates’ allow plenty of airflow ensuring the roots do not ‘sweat’. The result – rampantly healthy plants and an instant impact display that will grow in to a spectacular 3ft ball of colour!! Each basket holds up to 18 plants and is perfect for growing winter pansies, strawberries, trailing tomatoes or even herbs; use them throughout the whole year!

* Lattice gates make planting easier and allow the roots to breathe – no root damage, bruised foliage or sweating roots

* No liner required – no moss, no mess

* Integral reservoir in the base to hold water for better resilience during hot, dry periods or when you are away

* Made in the UK from heavy duty, recycled polymer

* Strong rust-proof ‘galvanized’ steel chain with 4 anchor points for better balance and less twisting – also with ‘T’ bar attachments for quick and easy application.

These are easy to use.

Start with the bottom layer of plants – this is four plants.Ensure there’s compost put in and put then plants through and then click the cage bit in place to secure the plants. This doesn’t damage the plants and is easy for them to grow through.

Mix in water retaining gel to the compost so it doesn’t dry out as much.

Top up with compost and then put the next 8 plants in.

Again the cages just clip over to stop them falling out.

Fill up again with more compost – pile it high so when it’s watered it’s still full!

In the top put 6 plants in.

Put in place and water well!

Best sellers at Thompson and Morgan

Best sellers at Thompson & Morgan!
What could you be buying and planting now – garlic can certainly be put in now – but for most gardeners now is a time to finish bringing in the summer harvest and start thinking about next year.
Collect flower seeds off the plants in the garden too . Poppies, peonies and lots of other flowers will be setting their seeds and about to drop them all over your garden! You can of course leave them to drop but you have less control about what comes up and in some cases you’re just feeding the mice! It’s good to save seed and start some plants off yourself in the spring. Especially so if you want to move plants to another area of the garden.
You should be thinking about manuring your vegetable patch or clay soil! Get some well rotted horse manure ideally and either dig it in, or leave a couple of inches on top over winter for the worms to help you with!
Start raking up the leaves and putting them into their own bin or bag. Don’t mix them in with the normal compost as they take too long to cut down. It’s probably time to mow the lawn one last time before winter and maybe neaten up any edges that have overgrown too.

Garlic : Grow All Your Own Collection 10 bulbs + 5 cloves

Greenhouses from Gardening Direct

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Gardening Direct has these greenhouses available. They vary in size and budget and should show you that a greenhouse is well within your reach!
A greenhouse enables you to grow tomatoes, aubergines and peppers during the summer. It’s a great place to keep tender plants over the winter and you can even grow plants in it all year round – a vine can do very nicely in a greenhouse!
If you like growing vegetables or flowers from seed then you’ll find the extra space a greenhouse gives you invaluable. It’s great for getting some trays of seeds off to an early start! If you grow potatoes in bags then you can also start off some first earlies at the beginning of the year inside the greenhouse! This means your new potatoes are even earlier and makes them more special!.
Heating a greenhouse can be done by either a parafin heater or an electric heater. There are also bottled gas heaters available.
Work out how much space you have for one. You can put one on earth or on a concreted patio area. If you have it on soil though you can plant directly into the soil which enables plants to do better water wise as they have more soil around the roots to draw water from. If you have one on a paved area then this can be very tidy and neat and you’ll get less weeds growing! It’s a great idea if you have pots to have some of the large grow bag trays to sit them in. That way they can have some extra water as a reserve on hot days! If you are growing tomatoes then sit a growbag on a tray with a couple of holes for drainage and insert pots into holes on the top side. Fill these with compost from another growbag and then plant the tomatoes in this. It gives them extra volume for the roots and means they retain water better!
A greenhouse is great for potting up plants too and can of course be used even when it’s raining outside! If you love gardening then a greenhouse is a must!

Lean-To Greenhouse (4ft x 6ft)
Lean-To Greenhouse (4ft x 6ft) £279.00
Click here to see how easy it is to build this greenhouse This lean-to greenhouse has all the features you expect from a larger greenhouse! The size and design make this the perfect choice for small gardens or balconies. Don’t let a lack of space rule out the benefits of having a greenhouse. Easy to install.
