Plum trees at Thompson and Morgan

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Thompson & Morgan has these various plum trees – either as sets or individual trees.
If every garden in the UK planted a fruit tree then that would be millions of extra trees planted – providing healthy fruit for people!
Perhaps we should all start doing our bit now and plant one and then spread the word!
I love plums – they’re quite dear at the shops though so you could save a fortune growing some yourself. Make plum jam when you have too many to eat – or pass them on to the neighbours too!

Cucumber seeds at Thompson and Morgan

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Cucumber seedsThompson and Morgan have 23 types of cucumber seeds

If you’d like to grow cucumbers then you’ll need some seeds, some pots and some tender loving care to give!

You can get indoor and outdoor cucumbers but they all need starting indoors. A cold frame is a great idea for growing them in!
You can buy seeds with resistance to good powdery and downy mildew. This makes them healthier and you’re more likely to get a decent crop! If you do well with them you’ll have plenty from a couple of plants! They like being in as much sun as possible though so don’t stick them in the shade!

How to start cucumbers off – plant the seeds from February to May for indoor
growing, April to May for outdoors.

They all start off indoors – just don’t start the outdoor ones too soon as
they’ll start to get big and you’ll have to keep them in until the frosts have
gone.

Sow the seeds about ½in deep in 3in pots of free-draining compost.
Place in a propagator and keep at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after
germination, usually 5-7 days.
I start mine off in a big plastic bag on a windowsill – this does the trick
for tomato seeds too. As soon as they start to show though undo the bag but
leave it around them to protect them from drafts.

When first true leaves develop, transplant into 5in pots. Finally plant into
10in pots or growbags. Grow on at a minimum 15C (60F).
