Sweet potato offer at Suttons Seeds

Sweet Potato Beauregard Plants

Sweet Potato Beauregard Plants £12.99
Traditionally sweet potatoes have been grown from ‘slips’, but quality can be poor and results disappointing.
At Suttons They have been working to supply a better product, hence the introduction of Pot Ready Plants, produced on their nursery from virus-free stock.
These are well-rooted and actively growing, they are a significant improvement on traditional ‘slips’.
Simply pot and grow on in a frost-free environment until June, then either re-pot or plant into the garden and you should be harvesting your very own sweet potatoes this autumn!Beauregard can produce good crops of medium sized tubers in British growing conditions. The tubers have that distinctive salmon-orange flesh with a sweet pronounced flavour packed full of vitamins and iron. Simply boil, steam, bake or mash for a delicious meal.
Pack of 10 Pot Ready Plants. Full growing instructions included.. . . .

Sounds a fab way to get started growing these rather lovely vegetables. So sweet sometimes you should just pour a bit of cream on them and eat them out of the skins as dessert!
I like roasting them. Give them a wash and dry, then prick all over with a fork. Put in a roasting tin. You can tell how sweet they are as they cook and the juices come out and caramelise. I serve them as veg but you can mash them and use them in other recipes too.

Potatoes at Thompson and Morgan

Is this the biggest range of seed potatoes in the UK?
PotatoesHuge list of potato varieties At Thompson and Morgan

This massive list of potatoes allows you to buy individual types or to pick from their carefully selected selection of collections.

Potatoes grown at home or on the plot are delicious. First earlies are always popular – home grown new potatoes are one of the best reasons to grow things at home! You can not beat that deliciousness that you get from freshly picked spuds boiled and put on a plate within half an hour of leaving the plot! Yummy spuds will make you want to grow your own every year once you’ve tried them. Start some off in bags in the greenhouse – potato sacks allow you to move them outside once frost risk has passed and you need the greenhouse for other things. Brilliant way of getting even earlier spuds.

On the allotment put them in and earth them up as they grow. Chit them on the windowsill to start with though so you get them going.

Spuds are easy and so delicious!

Grow in a container or be prepared to cover the plants with fleece in winter. They’ll do really well in a polytunnel too!
You can start chitting them now. That means just put them in a tray in the daylight so they start to shoot. They each need about 3 shots. If they have too many shoots then rub the extra ones off.
Plant them when they have well sprouted but not overly so!
August is the perfect time to start planting your potatoes ready for a Christmas day harvest. If you love new potatoes with a roast dinner then it’s amazing to be able to grow your own for your festive lunch!
It’ll be a job to do on Christmas morning to go and “unwrap” the potatoes and see how many you’ve got!
Don’t worry if you are short of space. Potatoes can be grown in patio planters on your balcony, patio or small garden. You can use any large flower tubs you’ve got! Some people even use those supermarket bags for life – the more solid ones!
