Slug trap experiment

Monday, July 6th, 2009

We got two plastic slug traps that come with little lids to keep the rain off.

We first tried cider as we had some very out of date cider. Not one slug went near it.

We then tried the cheapest beer we could get. (23p a can!) and the slugs love it!

It’s more organic than using slug pellets – although could get dear if the slugs drink too much!

You can use any container for putting beer in as a slug trap but open containers will fill up with rain and this will dilute the beer!

Picking broad beans

Monday, July 6th, 2009

It’s probably time to start picking some beans today. I know neighbour plots had their beans flowering by the time mine went out so they’ve already had shed loads of lovely fresh broad beans but I think mine will get their first picking today.

You can pick them when they’re small or leave them to grow a bit bigger, the danger being they may get too big and tough. You can tell when they’re ready as they dropp down instead of standing upright! Take care not to rip the plant as you remove pods.

I love broad beans – they’re great just as a vetetable side dish or served with hot crispy bacon!

Bean : Runner Bean : Desiree

Almost foolproof, it attains huge crops from a small area. Long, broad, completely stringless, very fleshy 25-30cm (10-12in) pods. Very heavy cropping, often averages 40 pods per plant. Beetroot Boro F1 has been bred to give increased Hybrid vigour, garden performance and flavour, thus increasing your harvest. Due to their wide ranging pest and disease resistance, there will be no need for the use of chemicals.

Cottage garden plants

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

If youre planning your garden to be as busy as possible you’re trying for a cottage garden look.

There’s some plants you should enjoy in your garden and they’re ones available to buy at lots of shops!Cottage Garden Collection (Plants and Bulbs)

The first pack comprises 3 plants each of some great favourites: Campanula carpatica Blue, Aquilegia Hybrids, Red Hot Poker, Dianthus Flashing Light, Heliposis Summer Sun & Delphinium Hybrids. These great planbts create a range of colour, height and style. The red hot pokers are fantastic plants that are quite striking! The delphiniums and aquilegia are mixed colours and these great a great pattern of colour.

The adantages of hardy perrenials are they only need planting once, and will come back each year with fresh colours and foliage. Most will spread through the border too! Plants are usually planted in threes or fives, the odd number helps planting look more natural and less forced. Read instructions for distances to plant apart so they have plenty of room to grow.

Once you’ve planted a border up and watered it well you can put on a layer of bark to help retain water and keep the weeds down. Rolawn Direct sell bark in bulk delivered to your door making it easy to get great value for money too. See Rolawn Direct for bark where you can use code bark16 for a 15% discount and is valid until 31/07/09.

Applying bark is a great way of ensuring the border looks good until all the plants have spread out a bit. It adds a very professional look to your garden too.
